Engaku-Ji Temple

This temple was established by Tokimune Hojo, the Eighth Regent of the Hojo regime, to comfort the souls of the dead who were lost during the Mongol Invasions from 1274-1281. Tokimune wished not just to honor the Japanese dead, but also the Mongolian casualties who had died at sea after a kamikaze (Divine Wind) swept asunder their invasion fleet.
